Retired scientist, I read a lot, fiction and non-fiction, on a wide range of subjects, though science, politics, philosophy, law, science fiction and historical detective stories are favourites.

I found the similarities between the cotton farming community and the Lewis Islanders of The Lewis Trilogy were interesting. Both are economically living on the edge, working extremely hard just to survive. A strongly fundamentalist church plays a strong part in people's lives, on the Sabbath at least.
Loved the original What If ? - looking forward to this one

The lower ranks of armies fighting foreign wars for reasons which are not obvious to the home population seen to be disproportionally filled with young men from rural or impoverished backgrounds, sent to fight far from home. I am reminded of the Russians being send to fight in Ukraine.
