Chapter 3 - To Die Poor is s Sin Follows the story of Wu Chunming, who, at 17, leaves her village in Hunan Province in 1992 without telling her parents to work in a factory making paint for toys, but returning home after two months.She left again in spring 1993, this time using money her mother had borrowed for her train fare. She abandons all her possessions, including her id card applying for a job at a hair saloon, which she fears might be a brothel, and wanders for a month, unable to work without ID, until she find an abandoned card belonging to Tang Congyun - who she becomes. She keeps a diary, works very hard to improve herself and moves many times, always upwards. She becomes involved early in a 'chuanxiao' pyramid scheme, heading a network of ten thousand people, before it was shut down by government, regulation - having been wealthy for two months.
