So finster die Nacht

J’ai trouvé ce livre au rayon SF & Fantasy de la médiathèque, mais il relève plutôt de la catégorie Horreur. C’est une histoire de vampire qui prend pour décor une banlieue déshéritée dans la Suède des années 80. Au récit horrifique se mêle des thématiques sociales : le chômage de longue durée, l’alcoolisme, le harcèlement scolaire, la drogue… Ça apporte un contexte intéressant au thème classique du vampire. Le livre aborde également le concept d’enfant-vampire, qui a déjà été traité ailleurs, mais il intègre bien toutes les problématiques que ça implique. Et on peut mentionner également une petite touche LGBT dans la dernière partie du livre, qui surgit de manière totalement inattendue il faut bien l’avouer.

Dans l’ensemble, j’ai trouvé ça pas mal. Distrayant. Mais la fin est un peu abrupte, satisfaisante et attendue, mais qui laisse pas mal de questions en suspens...

I watched the movie before reading the book, and I sorta wish I hadn't. I definitely would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had read it before seeing the movie, but despite that, it was still an amazing read. If you've already seen the movie, don't let that stop you from giving this a read. There are entire story lines that the movie barely even begins to touch on.

As an American reading the English-language version of the novel, I feel like there were probably a few Swedish cultural/historical references that I didn't entirely pick up on, but again, that's hardly enough to ruin a story for me.

Definitely recommend this to anybody who is looking for a gory, dark read.
